Two similar cabinets can carry very different prices depending on whether they arrive built. The gap is mostly logistics, and the savings are created before the product ever reaches a store.
Freight is priced by space, not weight
Shipping cost for bulky goods is driven by the volume a shipment occupies rather than by what it weighs. An assembled cabinet is mostly air, and air travels at the same rate as wood.
Flattening the same product into a carton of panels can multiply the number of units on a truck or in a container. The freight cost per unit falls in proportion.
That effect compounds across every leg of the journey, from factory to port to distribution center to store. Each leg is charged on the same space-based basis.
Warehousing and handling follow the same logic
Storage is also sold by space, so flat cartons occupy fewer pallet positions and less racking. A warehouse can hold far more inventory of the same product without expanding.
Flat cartons stack predictably and survive forklift handling better than shaped furniture. Damage rates fall, and damage is a direct cost that eventually shows up in price.
Store backrooms benefit too, because a takeaway carton can be handed over immediately instead of scheduling a delivery. The sale closes without a second logistics event.
Factory labor is genuinely removed
Assembly in a factory is fast but not free, and it commits the manufacturer to a fixed configuration. Shipping components lets the same panels serve several finished variants.
Designing for self-assembly changes the product itself, favoring cam locks, dowels and standardized panel sizes over joinery that requires skill. Those fittings are chosen for the customer's toolkit.
The labor does not vanish, it moves. The buyer performs it, and the price reflects that transfer.
Where the savings stop
Items with complex mechanisms, upholstery or curved frames flat-pack poorly, because the components cannot be reduced to panels. Reclining and sleeper mechanisms in particular arrive built.
Very large single pieces also hit a limit, since a carton that two people cannot carry loses the takeaway advantage. At that point delivery costs return.
This is why the flat-pack discount is deepest in storage furniture and shallowest in seating. The geometry decides.
What the buyer takes on
Assembly time is the obvious cost, but the more consequential one is build quality, since a poorly tightened fitting shortens the life of the piece. Structural strength depends on correct assembly.
Disassembly and reassembly for a move is also limited, because cam fittings lose grip when the holes wear. Moving flat-pack furniture repeatedly tends to end it.
Weighed against that, the price gap is real and the logistics behind it are straightforward. The buyer is paying less because the product traveled smaller.
