Walk through a television aisle and some sets are a generation behind but still stocked in quantity. Those are carryover models, and they are being sold deliberately rather than cleared out.
A carryover is still in production
A carryover model is a previous-year product that the manufacturer continues to build and ship after the replacement launches. Stock is replenished rather than run down.
That distinguishes it from clearance, where the remaining units are finite and the price falls until they are gone. Carryover prices are set, not discovered.
Because supply continues, the discount is stable across weeks rather than deepening. Waiting rarely improves a carryover price the way it can improve a true clearance price.
Why manufacturers keep the old line running
Panel production lines and component supply agreements do not stop the moment a new range is announced. Keeping the older design in production uses capacity and inventory that already exist.
It also lets the maker occupy two price points with one development budget. The engineering has been paid for, so the older model can be priced against competitors' entry ranges without hurting the new flagship.
Retailers value the arrangement because it gives them a credible lower tier that is still current stock. A shelf that is only clearance is unpredictable to plan around.
How to identify one on the shelf
Model designations usually encode a year or series marker, and a carryover keeps its original marker even when sold beside newer stock. The designation is more reliable than the shelf position.
Specification pages are another clue, since a carryover often lists an older processor generation or an earlier version of a connection standard. Those details do not change mid-life.
Continuous availability at a steady price across several weeks is itself the strongest signal. Clearance stock does not behave that way.
What the older model gives up
Year-to-year changes in televisions concentrate in processing, software support and connection standards more than in the panel itself. That makes the gap smaller in picture quality than the marketing implies.
Software support length is the more meaningful difference, since app compatibility and platform updates are tied to the software generation. A carryover starts its support period already partly spent.
Connection standards matter to anyone attaching a current games console or a high-refresh source. Those requirements are the clearest reason to pay for the newer generation.
Where the pricing lands
Carryover models tend to sit just below the new range and above genuine clearance, which is exactly the position that makes them attractive to a shopper comparing on features alone.
They also anchor the new model's price by making the step up look like a defined upgrade rather than an open-ended cost. Two adjacent tiers sell better than one.
For a buyer with no requirement tied to the newest standards, the carryover is usually the better arithmetic. For anyone with such a requirement, the discount is not a saving.
